    Liquid vitamins and liquid minerals are optimum for bariatric surgery patients, or anyone who may have difficulty swallowing pills.  My name is Dave Chambers and I am a bariatric surgery patient, having the surgery done on May 10, 2006. I had the Roux-en-Y bariatric procedure done, which tends to be the most successful.   One of the biggest problems facing bariatric patients is the ability to consume all the vitamins and nutrients needed to maintain a healthy body, while loosing weight.  My bariatric surgeon has reviewed the supplemental fact sheet on the EPIC ULTRA Liquid Vitamins and found it to be more than satisfactory for use with bariatric patients.   Instead of taking several vitamins pills twice daily (besides other supplements), only a one ounce serving of the EPIC ULTRA Liquid Vitamins is needed each day. TIP: place one capful of vitamins in your mouth, hold under tongue for 30 seconds, and then swallow. This allows you to absorb part of the B12 liquid vitamin component sublingually, and then the rest after ingestion.  The only other supplement bariatric surgery patients need is some additional calcium citrate, which I take later in the day. You should NEVER take your calcium citrate supplement with vitamins, as the iron content of the vitamin will be  adversely affected by the calcium .  Wait two hours between taking vitamins and calcium citrate supplement.  Here are my lab results from 2 years past surgery, taking the liquid vitamin levels in NRH Epic liquid vitamins for 7 months:  

Cholesterol, 135 (normal <200), Triglyceride 86 (normal <150), HDL (good) 60 (normal >/=40), LDL (bad) 58 (normal <100), cholesterol/HDL 2.3 (normal <5.0).

Albumin was 4.6, normal 3.3 to 4.8----Calcium 9.7, normal 8.5 to 10.5----Creatinine 1.3, normal 0.7 to 1.3,  Electrolytes (Sodium was 142, normal 135-145, Potassium was 4.8, normal 3.5 to 5.0, Chloride was 103, normal 101-111, CO2 was 29.5, normal 21-31),--- Glucose (fasting) was 84, normal 70-99, Iron was 107, normal 60-170---- Total Iron Binding Capacity was 290, normal 250-420----Iron Sat was 37%, normal 20-50%----Ferritin was 416.8, normal 30-400----Folate was 13.95, normal >5.38----Parathyroid was 57, normal 15-65----Thiamine (B1) was 192, normal 87-280----B12 was 584, normal 200-910----Vitamin D was 33 (25 for D3 and 8 for D2), normal total is 30-100.

    Lab results are the only way to monitor how any vitamin is being absorbed by your body. Recent studies have shown that over half of the US population suffers from low or seriously low levels of Vitamin D. Based upon this study, I've opted to augment my daily vitamins with additional 5000 IU capsules.  Every blood test I had taken for the first 18 months post op had levels of D that ran from 8 to 14, and this was after 50,000 IU prescription D caplets. It was only after I began taking liquid vitamins that my levels of D were within normal limits. So liquid vitamins do get absorbed better, as you can see from my experience with levels of D vitamins.
