100 % Calcium Citrate Powder
Why take those large calcium citrate pills? If you've had RNY or lapband surgery, you know pills can be difficult to swallow, and could cause a blockage. Normally, to get 600mg of calcium citrate, you have to swallow TWO LARGE pills. The photo below shows two pills that are 15/16" in length and 3/8" in width that make up 600mg of calcium citrate compared to 3/4 tsp of powdered calcium citrate that is equal to 600 mg.
This powder solves that issue. Use 3 servings of 3/4 tsp per day, and you'll get 1600mg of calcium citrate per day. At 700mg per 1 tsp serving, there are 94 servings in each 10 oz bag. Using the recommended 500-600mg per day for RNY patients, there are 125 servings in each 10 oz bag, enough for about 4 months daily usage. If used at about 2000mg per day, the bag will last 3 months. Mixes well with foods or drinks that have some substance. I use this in SF protein pudding, hot oatmeal, etc., mixed with my generic unflavored whey isolate protein. This is a powder and not a granulated protein powder. I've used the "powdered" NOW brand of calcium, only to find out it's granulated, like sand, and has a very gritty texture.
1 tsp is 700mg calcium citrate. This product is 21% elemental calcium. I consulted my surgeon and Vitalady on the topic of elemental citrate vs the elemental calcium. Calcium citrate is recommended for best absorption by RNY patients. My surgeon and Vitalady agree on this:
Surgeons recommend the 1600-1800mg of calcium citrate daily (broke into 500-600mg doses), realizing that only about 21-25% of this amount is actually elemental calcium. Surgeons know about the lesser amount of elemental calcium, but still consider the 1600-1800mg dosage of calcium citrate to be the best calcium supplement for RNY post ops.
